Gardens : A secret garden - gone but not forgotten

Note: I have decided to resurrect this blog post since, VERY SAD to say I recently found out that in February of 2009 a bushfire raged through the township destroying much in its path including much of this beautiful garden.

I love secret gardens! Although this one may not be so secret anymore, it is filled with all the magic and enchantment you would expect to find in such a lush green hideaway. Hidden among the trees of the small Victorian village of Marysville in Australia, it is a world full of fantasy, beauty and whimsy. It's creator, Bruno Torf has lovingly sculpted, gardened and built one of the world's most unique and deeply inspiring experiences for art and garden lovers of all ages.

The luscious sub-alpine forests of the surrounding area made an ideal setting for Bruno's plan and luckily the property he purchased had a large section of rain forest attached. Bruno's Art & Sculpture Garden began with just fifteen life sizes terracotta sculptures, and today boasts over one hundred and fifteen pieces on display, with Bruno continually adding new pieces. A gallery that houses over 200 of his creations brought over from Europe includes oil paintings, sketches and smaller sculptures. The unique experience of the garden and its wondrous inhabitants attracts thousands of visitors a year.

I would love to visit this place, wouldn't you? It's JUST COOL!

Fantastic for a small space and something to drool over for you midcentury modern collectors, Avant Garde was designed by Helen von Boch in the early 1970s. So what's more apropos then this clever Christmas Tree created by the Heineken Beer Company? This gargantuan green glass (and all these bottles are full too!) Christmas Tree stands at the front of the Nanjing road mall in Shanghai.

Heineken has always been clever with its beer bottles; Warren has written how in the sixties they considered redesigning them to work as bricks. Now in China, they are using them to build Christmas trees - right now these bottles are full - yet soon to be recycled (I wonder how this tree will be looking at midnight on New Years Eve?!) How JUST COOL!

I wish I had a patch of garden that I could "plant" these in but my yard is shaded by big maple trees. :(

Yet another reason why they have to bring motor vehicle inspection back in Oklahoma - to keep bulls from riding down the road.

This bull was caught in the act riding in his owners car by off duty police officer Donald Kraft. According to Kraft's report the driver was transporting the bull so that his daughter could ride it in the National History Day parade in Tulsa (see the letters stamped on the side of the bull). These pictures snapped by the officer are no bull either. It's a true story - bringing a new meaning to "pimp my ride" ...

Presentation is everything and this photo sure makes these simple minimalist pots look like something very special. And they are! Bambinas are super cute handmade pastel/white colored vessels, slipcast from Matauri Bay clay , native to New Zealand where the maker Zakiah Heath calls home.

The wee Bambinas are double cast and high fired, then sanded and left unglazed. They look beautiful on their own or in a cluster, perfect for a dinner table, mantle or window ledge. Craigslist gets stranger by the day. Instead of checking the newspaper for weird news, I skip it and go directly to Craigslist. So because Turkey Day is right around the corner, I thought that this cute little fella would make a newsworthy tidbit...

Meet Jerry. Lyndsey Medeiros and her husband adopted the three-year-old turkey and his girlfriend Penelope from a Rhode Island farm last week. But Jerry has cataracts, and his eye problems mean he can't eat independently or join his female companion, for fun and flying.

Medeiros has posted an ad on Craigslist seeking donations for the surgery. She said the procedure could cost up to $2,600. Her farm in Rehoboth, Mass., cares for other animals with health problems. "My husband and I rescued a 3 year old Turkey from an add on craigslist last week. I realized that he had a bluish tint to his eyes, he walked into things and had a hard time eating and drinking on his own and after brining him to a veterinary opthamologist it was discovered that he has cataracts that can be corrected with surgery. We would not be even contemplating surgery for Jerry unless it greatly improved his quality of life, but right now he needs full assistance to eat and drink and is pretty sedentary because of his lack of vision. Unfortunately surgery costs upwards of $2600, which is a little out of our reach for us for an animal that otherwise possibly would have ended up on someones dinner table. We are accepting donations to go towards Jerry's surgery and care afterwards..." So, if you are interested in not eating but helping a turkey this Thanksgiving, then go here to reply to the craigslist ad. And BTW, we're skipping the turkey this year and eating lobster. YUMMMMM.

Speaking of iPhones, I awoke this morning to mine playing "Papa loves Mambo" . It was my son, Josh with GREAT news! Apple just released his rpg game RAVENSWORD : THE FALLEN KING...only a few hours ago! I am soooo excited for him and so VERY PROUD of him!! Everyone was on pins and needles last week when apple rejected the game submission due to a glitch in the engine that it was created on. But it was quickly fixed, resubmitted and apple has passed it with flying colors. Here are the details from TOUCH ARCADE:

Without a doubt, homemade Halloween costumes are far superior to generic ones bought in the costume shop or at the store. Artist Eric Testroete proves that with his "this years" halloween costume. He created his own head in cartoon-like BIG HEAD mode and made it entirely of paper. Using graphic software including 3D Max, he designed, modeled,printed and folded this faceted paper mask to go over his head and tuck under his jacket. Seems like a mighty intense process but the result? A very cool Eric in Wonderland effect. WOW!

About this painting - "This nostalgic painting was inspired by many childhood Christmases spent at my Grandparents' cozy old victorian house in the Catskill Mountains in Upstate New York! That's our 1958 pink and blue Ford Station Wagon car but instead of driving to get the tree, we would actually trudge up onto the mountain and chop one down for the living room. Usually a lopsided scraggly "Charlie Brown" tree that looked beautiful once it was up and festooned with shimmery old fashioned glass ornaments, ropes of glass beads and dripping with silver tinsel. Underneath the tree Granny always had a little town of micah covered cardboard houses, a mirror "skating rink" and lead skating figures. Christmas time was always such a magical time for us up on Schunnemunk Mountain! Good memories!"

If you still haven't found that perfect costume for the party Saturday night and you love your iphone then this geeky Halloween disguise may be for you. It's the world's first award winning "working" iPhone costume created by Reko Rivera and John Savio. The two costumes have 3 batteries each with a total runtime of 4.5 hours before needing to be charged overnight. It all started two years ago, when Reko Rivera and Bobby Hartman created a wearable large iPhone costume with a real 37" lcd tv. An iPod was attached with a looping video of a real iphones screen in normal use. This time with the help of John Savio and John Matthews the team created yet another amazing rendition of the new iPhone 3GS. Savio loved the original idea but wanted to take it to the next level and make it thinner and actually work with user input! With some heavy researching and some solid determination Savio finally found a solution. He managed to modify the software on the iPhone to allow a live dual image output to the large 42" lcd tv while maintaining the image in landscape mode. Reko originally came up with the idea and really pushed to see his vision come to life two years ago. This year John and Reko plan to compete in most of the local and online contest to win back the two thousand dollars invested in the costumes design. If the play / movie "Little Shop of Horrors" didn't spark your interest about the intriquing world of carnivorous plants, then listen up. Not only is the Venus Fly Trap a fascinating plant creature but there are literally hundreds of others that have adapted and evolved into this unique and interesting plant group that lures, traps and then devours insects. They entice their prey with scent, color, and nectar and can be found growing in most regions of the world and although most do eat small insects, the larger plants such as Nepenthes can eat small amphibians and rodents.CRAZY! It's no wonder that these unusual plants are collected and grown by hobbyists the world over! Makes me want to get my green thumb out and give this hobby a whirl. But living in the Northeastern United States (the mercury dropped to 28 degrees last night and it's only October and I live in a big old drafty Victorian house) I don't know how the little fellas would survive under my care. But take a look at these spectacular bug eating wonders. What beautiful examples of Mother Nature's creativity!

I love the stunts (or missions as they call them) that ImprovEverywhere pulls off! Here's a hilarious one involving 2000 plus actors walking their invisible dogs on the streets of New York. Check it out and laugh!

For their latest mission, over 2,000 people walked “invisible dogs” down the streets of Brooklyn on a Sunday afternoon. The leashes were on loan from the current owner of 51 Bergen Street, the factory space where the invisible dog toy was invented in the 1970s. Participants of all ages spread out from Red Hook to Brooklyn Heights, very seriously walking their very silly dogs.

Then throw them into the washing machine on the hot water setting. And at the end of the cycle take them out and instead of three ski caps you have (VIOLA!) three cool felted nesting bowls.

Last December an unusual restaurant opened on the corner of Prince and Elizabeth Streets in New York. At La Cave des Fondus the fare is not unusual - true to it's name it specializes in tasty fondues. It's the bottle service that you'll find a bit different since wine and other beverages are served up in baby bottles instead of classic stemware. Jacques Ouari, owner of the Manhattan restaurant strived to make this restaurant a faithful replica of the fun Montmartre restaurant Le Refuge des Fondus in France, where Parisians eagerly suck down their wine just like real babies suck down formula.

But what about the sanitary factor? The health department gave Oari the green light to open as long as all bottles went through the dishwasher. Still, how sanitary can that be? Really... eeeewww... I think I'll stick with my platex disposable bottles. ( Place looks JUST COOL though )

Head Lice? Crazy!

Not. It's the Giant Isopod, abundant in the cold, deep waters of the Atlantic. In Northern Taiwan and other areas, these up to fifteen inch critters are not uncommon at seaside restaurants, served boiled - The white meat being similar to crab or lobster in texture. They look creepy...but I bet they taste delicious.

Well isn't this guy brilliant. Or a little crazy. Or both. Here's what happens when you have a little too much time on your hands...

"In the garden of my house there's a tree with lots of randomly grown twigs. It looks odd and nice at the same time. One day I asked myself if I could create a piece of music with it.

To tune the tree I picked a fundamental note and tuned the twigs by trimming them with a pencil sharpener. I used two Røde NT6 and a NTG-2 as microphones, combined with a customized stethoscope.

I recorded the tracks live on a Pro Tools LE system. I didn't use any synthesizer or sampler to create or modify the sounds. All the sounds come from playing the tree, by bowing the twigs, shaking the leaves, playing rhythms on the cortex and so on.

Divine intervention has surely brought some funky looking fruit to the table in the past few years. If the oddly shaped vine grown fruit "Buddha's Hand" isn't odd enough for you then take a look at these heavenly Buddha shaped mini pears which will soon be hitting the produce market.

A Chinese farmer has reinvented the pear, growing it into a funky buddha shaped fruit and despite it's hefty cost of $8 each, locals in his home village of Hexia, northern China, considering the fruit to be lucky,have reportedly been buying it up. Gao Xianzhang has created 10,000 of his heavenly pears this season and plans on marketing them throughout the UK and Europe. The farmer spent six years perfecting his harvest, carefully crafting each one which grows inside an individual mold.

I'm not certain if the pears have divine powers but they sure are JUST COOL!

If you're a gamer and you have an iPhone, you have got to see this awesome and impressive high quality action RPG for the iPhone and iPod touch called Ravensword: The Fallen King. It is due to be released by Crescent Moon within the next month and frankly I CAN'T WAIT!

I have the inside scoop because I've been witnessing production first hand and have watched it being played by the developer and let me tell you - the graphics, gameplay and EVERYTHING are far superior than any other game I have seen available! This fantastic medieval game replicates the success of such games as Oblivion and Fable on the 360. With lots of action going on, you'll navigate large environments and battle with Orc, Ogres and Goblins with a wide variety of fantasy weapons and magic. The beautiful backgrounds are highly detailed, the characters highly imaginative, and the game itself one you won't be able to put down. AND you won't believe how they made the sound effects! (Oh yeah, did I mention that the music is really good too ?)

16 years ago a group of farmers in Japan began creating 'murals' by planting rice in different colors in Japanese paddy fields. The 'Paddy art' was started as a project to revitalise the local economy. Each year hundreds of villagers and other volunteers help plant the four different colored varieties of rice in the vast fields, planting purple and yellow-leafed kodaimai rice along with their local green-leafed tsugaru roman variety. The rice is planted in May and the creations bloom to their best in September .

For a piece of cheese, Jack Russell Terrier, Tillamook Cheddar from Brooklyn, New York will paint you a masterpiece! This paw-some pooch has been likened to artists Jackson Pollock and Cy Wembly and at the age of ten has been widely exhibited throughout the U.S. and Europe. At sales of over 2000 dollars for each of her paintings she ranks up there with other famed animal artists like chimp painter "Congo" who's paintings bring in over 8000 dollars.

What's this fluffy Picasso's technique? Her owner Bowman Hastie, explains:

"Tillie's primary process is a dynamic color transfer technique. In preparation for each of her works, her assistants assemble a touch-sensitive recording device by affixing pigment-coated vellum to a sheet of lithograph paper backed by mat board. The artist takes the prepared "canvas" in her mouth and brings it to her workspace. Working on the outside surface, she applies pressure with teeth and claws in a methodic ritual marked by dramatic shifts in tempo and intensity. The resultant sharp and sweeping intersecting lines complement the artist's delicate paw prints and subtle tongue impressions, composing an expressionistic image that is revealed on the paper beneath when she is finished. She works with shocking intensity, sometimes to the point of destroying her creations. "

When asked if Tillie enjoys exhibiting at shows, Bowman replied, " She typically hangs around the cheese table!" which makes sense since Tillie was named after her favorite brand of cheddar.

I'm on a sprout kick. I've tried sprouting broccoli seeds, alfafa seeds and mung beans.The mung beans worked fab...the rest died. So I have been eating mung bean sprouts on everything.. You name it, everything. I've even threatened my daughter when she wanted me to bake brownies that I would be adding a few healthy additives to the mix heheh. I'll never run out of these sumptiously crunchy little delicacies since I have a huge rotating harvest of them in my pantry . . . which now looks like a laboratory.
After reading a few awesome mung bean articles, I found that not only are they mega healthy for you but that they are listening too... and responding! Yes , even the lowly mung beans has spiritual ears. Check out this interesting article written by Cynthia Sue Larson.

An Element of Effective Prayer

Have you ever wanted to know the best way to wish for something? Have you wondered whether some kinds of prayer are more effective than others... or if stress or misfortune will affect whether your wishes and prayers come true?
If you’d like answers to these questions, you’re in luck! Researchers at Spindrift found that certain kinds of prayer are more likely to promote healthy growth of mung beans, a staple of Asian cuisine and the most-consumed sprout in the world. Spindrift is a publicly supported foundation dedicated to the scientific research of consciousness and healing through silent prayer, using experimental tests on mung beans, soybeans, molds, and other organisms. Spindrift was founded by two Christian Science practitioners, Bruce and John Klingbeil.
Carefully controlled studies at Spindrift involving sprouting beans showed that there is a striking 85% difference between beans placed in ideal growing conditions and those which are under some kind of environmental stress (having too little or too much moisture, or are too hot or cold, or have too much salt). A difference has also been found between goal-directed thought (where seeds are imagined to be growing very well) and non goal-directed thought (where no specific outcome is requested or visualized).
We might guess that beans starting out in ideal growing conditions would respond best to prayer, and out-perform traumatized beans... and also that visualization would enhance the growth of these beans. What would you guess?
Interestingly, researchers at Spindrift discovered that the growth of mung beans placed in the ideal growing environment which were prayed for with either the goal-directed or non goal-directed thought did not improve as quickly and well as the stressed seeds. Healthy plants were already at the ideal rate of growth and did not improve as dramatically as the seeds that were too wet, too dry, or too salty. The stressed beans really took off! The next surprising finding was that seeds prayed for with visualization did not grow as quickly as seeds prayed for in a more general, non-directed fashion, although both kinds of prayer improved the rate of mung bean growth.
While humans are only distantly related to mung beans, it’s still refreshing to consider the possibility that some environmental stress can actually be good for our growth and development. I’ve found that when I’ve been under tremendous pressure, I’ve also experienced the most growth. Times of parenthood, death of a friend or relative, career change, divorce and moving stretch my sense of limitations, beliefs and boundaries and remind me to pray for the best outcome? - Since any more specific wish might not turn out to be best for me. Stressful times give me exciting new opportunities to break free of old patterns - much as a bean sprout breaks free of its husk to reach up to the light!
Other studies at Spindrift have shown that more frequent prayers sped the rate of growth of soybeans. This finding seems to indicate that more frequent prayers (or prayers by more people) can be dramatically more effective than solo prayer.

Recycled plumbing turns into funky furniture over at Van Thiel and Co., an antique slash curiosity shop in Toronto. This is the Radiator-Chair - Pricey indeed at $1,490, and just as uncomfortable I'm sure. It's more of a sculpture than something I'd want to sit on.

It's got a cool companion though - “The Odd Laundry Room End Table,” pictured below, cost $1,200, that I think might look JUST COOL in my house.
