art - bento anyone?

funny sandwiches...

"Don't play with your food", "Clean your plate, there are children starving in China". Remember hearing those "encouraging" words as a child, coaxing you to finish your food? Heck, all my mom had to do was make sandwiches like these. I'd have eaten these right up!

and bento?

I discovered bento on flickr about a year ago and have been meaning to write a blog on it. What is bento? Bento originated in Japan and is a packed meal, usually lunch. Bento boxes have internal dividers, and sometimes several stacked layers, so different kinds of food sit in their own little compartments. Traditionally, the whole thing is wrapped together with chopsticks in a cloth or special bag, and the goal is to make the whole package as attractive as possible - from considering the color combinations of the food and presenting and garnishing it as neatly and artfully as you can, to coordinating the box, chopsticks and wrapper, etc. When I went searching for bento I found some amazing ones on flickr. It really is an art form!

Above are my favorites from the bento queen, sakurako kitza... check out more on her flickr site.
