Interior :: arts & crafts reborn

Of course I'm liking these beautiful matte Arts & Crafts vases ! The Arts & Crafts Movement (late 1800's to early 1900's) was a period and is a style that I have always been smitten with. These Teco vases were influenced by the Prairie Style and one of my all time fav architects, Frank Lloyd Wright. (I knew there had to be a reason why they appealed to me so much!) Their strong geometric lines, pure organic colors and sturdy utilitarian look have me sold.

If you want the originals of this Teco line that was produced between 1899 and 1930 you'll have to pay a pretty penny. They commonly fetch four figures at auction. But was I surprised when I found a company called Prairie Arts that is reproducing them today for a reasonable $60 to $195! The company also produces Frank Lloyd Wright screens and stencils.

Check out the Teco Art Pottery Collection™. Pottery that is JUST COOL!

architecture - Thailand dream house with dreamy view

thailand house
Perched about 200 feet above the sea,John Chadwick’s spacious living room has a wall of windows set above an infinity pool that makes it seem as if the water stretches all the way to Patong Beach, a popular night spot in Phucket, Thailand {how is that pronounced?} ;)

But seriously...when Greenwich Connecticut native,Chadwick switched jobs and ended up in Thailand , he fell in love with a property in Phucket and built a house there. It was all about the view and having his custom dream home be Frank Lloyd Wright inspired. "I told the architect I wanted to build a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Thailand," said Mr. Chadwick, a real estate executive. "I want strong horizontals. I want big, broad-shouldered spaces." And thats exactly what he got. The sprawling 7,500-square-foot house, sitting on a 12,350-square-foot lot, cost more than $2.5 million and was completed a few years ago. The top floor of the two-story house includes the living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, office and patio. The bottom floor is designed for parties, with three more bedrooms, an exercise/game room and a massage room, all surrounding a pool equipped with lighting and sound systems.

What a place. What a view! It's JUST COOL!

ECHOING EICHLER

Today is Friday - Tag Sale day - I make my rounds to all the area sales looking for unusual finds for my ebay site and usually come home with a few little treasures for myself. Rounding the corner of Brooks Edge and Hilltop, I glide into one of my favorite developments . I am not a fan of developments either.
Teak Crest was built in the early 1950's - mid 1960's and has a wonderful step back in time feel. From the towering canopy of maples that lure you along the wide winding lanes, to the Eichler / Wright inspired homes that rise out of the rolling emerald lawns, it is the quintessential throwback to a bygone era. I expect to see a bow-tied white uniformed milkman rolling up the road in his milk truck or a perfectly coiffed June Cleaver appear on the front steps with an Ipana smile . I am reminded that when I do find MY PERFECT HOUSE it will probably be one like these with their simple modern design and solid sensibility. They aren't sprawling, something that would have been at the top of my wish list twenty or so years ago, but just right in size and functionality.
I will undoubtedly make a few small changed to the design - to update and green it a little more but amazingly these houses built over 50 yrs ago can today be considered just as green, if not more so than their contemporaries.
They don't make 'em like they used to!
