Awww shucks - of course this neat item would be sold out but I have to show it to my readers anyway because what a JUST COOL concept!

Fantastic for a small space and something to drool over for you midcentury modern collectors, Avant Garde was designed by Helen von Boch in the early 1970s. Basically a set of stacking tableware for four persons that becomes a centerpiece for the  dining room, forming a ball in different colors (brown, white, red brown) when not in use. 19 pieces in total, including plates, side dishes and bowls in different sizes  and they are marked underneath each piece "Villeroy & Boch, avant garde, made in Germany".Unfortunately sold out at furniture love. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

The US MAIL :: goes midcentury modern

Okay , I admit I'm a little behind the times when it comes to postage stamps. Yesterday I had to visit the USPS.com website to see how much a first class postage stamp is because I had a letter to post and had no idea how many of last years postage stamps (that I found in a drawer) my letter would need. You see, I pay all my bills online and email everyone so have little need for snail mail. The rates change so often too and so does postage stamp art. So I was highly impressed when I saw these nifty Charles and Ray Eames postage stamps on the USPS site ( via ohdeedoh ). I think they're cool and so will you if you are a midcentury- modern -aholic like I am (sometimes). Even if they did come out last year ;) I'm sure you can get them at your local PO.

I'll never be a collector of stamps but these little beauties are definitely JUST COOL!Hey I wonder if they have any Frank Lloyd Wright's?

I love the sleek lines of midcentury modern furniture and Blackbird Modern has some cool pieces that look so ultra modern, you'd think they came right off the assembly line today. But nope, these wonderfully funky pieces are over 50 years old, manufactured in the 50's and 60's when design saavy was at the height of hip-ness!

architecture - modern is primitive

Poised precariously on the edge of a cliff, Casa Poli is an elemental concrete cube perforated by large square openings. Overlooking the Coliumo Penninsula just south of Santiago Chile, this dramatic monolith structure was designed by young Chilean/Argentinian architects Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen who took the structures design que from its spectacular and remote setting. Local farmers and fisherman were put to work building it, handpouring the concrete into untreated timber frames with only the aid of a small concrete mixer and four wheelbarrows. To me the exterior appears austere and looming, yet the photos show another side to it's interior which looks very warm thanks to the organic and native materials used to build it and beautiful play of light from those interestingly arranged windows. I love the simple minimalist look in contrast with such strong lines and presence.

FLOWER POWER

It's back! My teen years were spent steeped in flower power. Mod fashion, pop art, mini skirts and brightly painted vw bugs. There were peace signs, Woodstock , bob dylan, andy warhol, timothy leary, sit-ins,vietnam,grungy bare feet and bellbottoms. Appliances were avocado green and coppertone brown, ceilings were low, and teenagers high. Sunshine wasn't only the warm yellow rays of the sun and a nickle wasnt just a coin that paid for a five cent stamp. (that was the going rate of a first class letter, a hershey bar, a bottle of coke and a phone home from the now extinct glass phone booth)
Luckily , parts of that 60's era got left behind.And fortunately there are ones that have come full circle and emerged today just as bright as ever. Like Flower Power. I love this resurge of abstract flower designs I am finding. What a statement these make in modern interiors today. A splashy pillow or a funky retro chair done in a mod floral design give any room a fresh new POW! Reprodepot has some prints that are JUST COOL!

ECHOING EICHLER

Today is Friday - Tag Sale day - I make my rounds to all the area sales looking for unusual finds for my ebay site and usually come home with a few little treasures for myself. Rounding the corner of Brooks Edge and Hilltop, I glide into one of my favorite developments . I am not a fan of developments either.
Teak Crest was built in the early 1950's - mid 1960's and has a wonderful step back in time feel. From the towering canopy of maples that lure you along the wide winding lanes, to the Eichler / Wright inspired homes that rise out of the rolling emerald lawns, it is the quintessential throwback to a bygone era. I expect to see a bow-tied white uniformed milkman rolling up the road in his milk truck or a perfectly coiffed June Cleaver appear on the front steps with an Ipana smile . I am reminded that when I do find MY PERFECT HOUSE it will probably be one like these with their simple modern design and solid sensibility. They aren't sprawling, something that would have been at the top of my wish list twenty or so years ago, but just right in size and functionality.
I will undoubtedly make a few small changed to the design - to update and green it a little more but amazingly these houses built over 50 yrs ago can today be considered just as green, if not more so than their contemporaries.
They don't make 'em like they used to!

Yes I do, I do love plaid - maybe on an antique tin - on a little girl's taffetta dress or bow in her hair- on my poppy- petunia dog's collar - but everyone, let's nix those plaid herculon sofas. They aren't cool nor are they in.
